HONK! Here comes the first MUST KEEP FREE date in the Sunny Colch calendar for 2013: Saturday 20th July sees the return of the ACE Colchester Carnival down the High Street and processing into Castle Park.
Hurrah!
This will be the third year of the resurrected event, after a tremendous amount of work by Colchester Round Table and the Colchester Ladies Circle. An impressive £8,000 was raised for hyperlocal causes in 2012 alone.
The theme for 2013 will be… animals.
We can see it now – Pink Floyd being played out of a massive PA lodged on the Mayor’s Balcony at the Town Hall, and a giant pig floating over the copper clad roof of Jumbo. The Essex Lion may even make an appearance.
Grrrrr.
As for the reason to all the fury friend themed Carnival celebrations?
That will be the 50th birthday party of Colchester Zoo.
It is hoped that the animal theme will also be explored in the floats as they make their way down the High Street and towards the party in Castle Park. Eddie the Eagle will be well suited to the occasion. We await with interest to see how a certain lovely local taxi firms fits up to the animal challenge this year.
The date of the 20th July is significant as well. The Sunny Colch schools will be but a week away from the six-week break. The kids (and teachers) will already be as high a Carnival kite.
The Carnival is once again very kindly made possible with a little corporate clout from the Weston Homes Community Stadium and our friends at The Gazette, blah, blah blah.
But it’s not all about the sponsorship and backing.
It’s about the Sunny Colch Carnival SMILES.
The Chronic is starting work on our Carnival costume this weekend.
Easy, tiger.
