B-Ball on the Berryfield Mosaic

firstsite

Basketball and breakin’ [Ooooh] on the Berryfield Mosaic.

Brilliant.

We’re not entirely sure that the cool cat Rafael Vinoly had this type of street style in mind when he constructed firstsite. But it’s bloody brilliant to see that the one of the iconic scenes in Sunny Colch is not seeing some contemporary action.

Step forward local lad Andi Miller to showcase his both his b-ball and breakin’ skills in the video above. Filmed by AJ Productionson the fly, we believe is the correct term, Daddio – firstsite has never looked better.

It is this exact everyday use of the space that The Chronic (and many others) have been continually calling for if the Golden Goose is going to have any relevance to the residents of Sunny Colch.

Credit to the firstsite staff for stepping back and allowing the amazing skills to be filmed. There is some crossover of course with both Sorry I’m Late and the current Hammer Prints season at firstsite – both make use of the Berryfield in trying to re-create a contemporary setting.

Back on the b-ball front and don’t forget that the recently formed Colchester Gladiators team are flying out there on the court [Oooh, Oooh, etc.] With the experience of the Gladiators American Football Team backing up the ball players, the next home game is on 16th January at the Colchester Academy along Hawthorn Avenue.

Next time The Chronic is perusing the modern art around firstsite, we promise to re-create our crazy spasm [YEAH] from back in the day.

Cheers to @JJDoyleOriginal for the heads ups.

Credit to Firstsite for embracing what amounts to live art.

    Credit to Andi Miller too.

I agree that everyday use of the spaces in Firstsite is a step in the right direction, Andi Miller’s skills mirror the new wave.

This is an opportunity for me to also offer my support to the Skateboarders sect who hang out in and around the building.

These young guys are polite, considerate and bring much life and energy to the surrounds. They know a thing or two about art and music as well and it’s good to see a ‘scene’ evolving around the place.

The skateboarders are amazing and very considerate of others. I usually have a toddler with me and they move away from us and ensure her safety. We both love watching them!
