Here’s something incredibly crappy that could do with some collective help around Sunny Colch. We don’t normally blog about crime; we don’t normally blog about negativity. But put the two together and add into the equation bicycles, and you get a blog post that The Chronic can’t ignore.
Nine [NINE!] mountain bikes were stolen from the same location in Sunny Colch last night. MTB enthusiast Glen Welburn returned to his Ipswich Road area address after work, to the saddening sight of a garage that had been broken into.
This was a secure – as secure can be – lock up. The MTB’s were clearly Glen’s passion. It’s quite a collection, and one that been built up over the years with much tinkering and customisation of the parts.
Some Bike Thief Scum around Colchester now has a job lot of MTB’s that are worth EVERYTHING to Glen, but not a great deal when sold in some shady pub deal.
There’s probably a value of around £10k in total here. That’s the *market* value when sold to a similar bicycle specialist who understands the fine-tuning of the mechanics that are listed below.
Bike Thief Scum is probably just looking to offload the collection ASAP.
Anyone with any information should contact Glen on 07979 886828, or call the non-emergency police number on 101.

Bike Theft is both heart breaking and pointless. The true value of the bicycle – both economic and emotional – is never recouped by Bike Thief Scum. Thankfully the cycling community has the decency to know not to buy off Bike Thief Scum. For every knock off cheapo bike there is a cyclist mourning the loss of their prize posession.
We’ve blogged before about some basic bike lock up tips around Sunny Colch. The bicycle racks opposite the Town Hall are our favourite secure (ish) location around town. They’re visible and in a central location. It goes without saying that you should be using two locks every time.
What’s perhaps most disheartening for Glen is that this crappy, crappy break in took place in his own home. Bike Thief Scum at least live up to their name.
If you’re the victim of bicycle theft around Sunny Colch then please do report the crime to the police. Crime statistics are everything – if bicycles fall below the radar then resources are allocated elsewhere. Plus a good tip is to try the bicycle auction up at Severalls on the first Saturday after any encounter with Bike Thief Scum.
There’s no harm in re-posting the video by the very much-missed Barry Mason of Southwark Cyclists.
Good luck Glen.

Alas my other half had the bicycle mirror taken from her bike parked right in the High Street last year. Oh, and CCTV didn’t see anything. Nor did the customers sitting on the tables on the pavement drinking their crappucinos. Thieving scum. Sorry, no more negativity.
Further to your post on 8th November (Bike Thief Scum)
I am Glens girlfriend – and was actually asleep in the house when the bikes were stolen.
Just to let you know Glen actually spotted some of his bits on ebay – and the scum who was selling them actually used his real name. (Of course he is now backtracking and has come up with at least 4 different reasons why he had the stuff!!!)
Currently this is in the hands of the police, so we don’t know what has been recovered or what condition it is in, but the good news is that at least he (and one of his co-scum) have had the pleasure of the police turning up on their doorsteps and spending some quality time with them.
Moral of the story – if you do have your stuff stolen, dont give up – keep an eye on ebay and pink bike, you might be lucky. for us we know who has handled our stolen gear, and have seen some lovely pictures of him on pink bike so if he was to visit colchester again from sunny hertfordsire we would love to have a little chat with him ha ha x
Thank you to everyone who has reposted pictures of the bikes, we have had so many supportive messages and it has been appreciated x
